Our culture has so many misconceptions about menopause! This midlife transition can be filled with knowledge, wisdom and inspiration. But it all begins with self-empowerment. Ever since the Women’s Health Initiative study was published in 2001 (re: associated risks that may be associated with HRT) many women are seeking other approaches to control menopausal symptoms. At our center, we often use acupuncture to help reduce hot flashes and fatigue. In addition, we may suggest herbal supplements. If you go this route, it is important to work with a physician who is familiar with the use of herbs and nutraceuticals, in order to evaluate potential drug-to-herb and/or vitamin interactions.
We find a small percentage of women may need hormones for a short period of time during this transitional period. Occasionally, we prescribe individually compounded bio-identical hormone replacement therapy. Although studies have not yet shown bio-identical hormones to be safer than traditional HRT, we feel that this may be a better option, because they are designed to mimic and balance the hormones found in a woman’s own body. And there are many other methods that can help enhance your health and well-being, as well. Remember to eat a well balanced diet, exercise regularly and strive to have balance in your life. In summary, if you are experiencing perimenopause or menopausal symptoms, my suggestion is to educate yourself as much as possible. And be sure to find a physician that is willing to work with you, to personalize your healthcare plan.
